Monday Moons!

Here's another one of those "dangling participle" shots.

Dangling participle. Have no idea what that is. Must go look it up.

Hmm, my trusty Guth, Words and Ideas doesn't address it. Must continue the search. . .

Okay, I Googled the dangling participle thing. It's a verb form ending in -ed or -ing that is used to modify a noun, but if the noun isn't a direct antecedent, or at least closest to it, it can be misinterpreted. Here's an example:

"The way his balls were dangling, Logan was afraid he might lose them down the shower drain."

No, wait. That's correct. He IS afraid he might lose them down the drain. Let's try that again.

"Dangling over the shower drain, Logan feared for his balls."

That's it! It infers that Logan, HIMSELF, is dangling over the shower drain, rather than his balls, which we know is NOT the case.

At least, I don't think it is. . . .

Meanwhile, Hero is due in today. One more chance to correct mistakes after this, and then it's done. Sorry it takes so long to get a book in print. It goes without saying that you can read them faster than I can write them, but I suppose that's as it should be. This one wound up being more of a last minute crazy rush because my editor asked me for a new opening scene for it on Thursday. She wanted something along the lines of Fugitive's prologue, and I didn't have that "Eureka" moment for what it would be until I was driving home from Bloomington on Friday afternoon, so I had, basically, two days to finish the copyedits and write a new scene since I had to work last night. I certainly hope she likes it because it was the ONLY thing I could think of that wouldn't cause repercussions throughout the entire book! You'll see what I mean when you read it in August.

Also, she did accept the proposal for Renegade and liked the idea of the "Johnny Appleseed" Zetithian who goes about spreading his seed without a care until he meets that one mousy little woman who steals his heart. Not sure what we'll call that one. I ran the idea of the "horsewhisperer" Zetithian past her, but we didn't have a lot of time to talk, so I'm not sure about that one, but the good news is that there will be three more CSC books coming! Renegade will be out in the Spring of 2011, the next in the Fall of 2011, and the third in the Spring of 2012.

*pauses to take a deep breath*

I just realized I haven't written an actual blog here since the one I wrote on New Year's Eve. Had more time then, I guess. Thanks to all of you for being there for me during this crazy promotional month. It's been very comforting knowing that you're all behind me in this venture and I appreciate your enthusiastic comments more than you will ever know. You're the greatest!

I'm writing this on Monday night, and I've got to work on a pitch to my editor for Renegade as soon as I post this. I'm planning to call her on Tuesday morning (skipping my riding lesson because it's too cold), and have a chat with her. I hope I can come up with an amazing "hook" for her, but since pitches aren't something I'm particularly good at, I've asked Marie Force (aka The Pitch Queen) for help. Unfortunately, her brain is cottage cheese at the moment, and I basically had to write a pitch to remind her what the story is about. After that, I need to get back to work on the copyedits to Hero, which are due back by Feb 1st. It shouldn't be that much trouble, but it did wake me up a time or two when I thought of things I needed to add. I liked the ideas I had, but lost more sleep--something I don't get enough of as it is.

Speaking of cold, it's pretty chilly back here in my bedroom "office" this evening. The soup I had for supper has my tummy full, but it isn't doing a thing for my cold feet! Must go heat up my foot warmer. . . takes six minutes to microwave that thing. Hold on. . . .

Okay, I'm back. Now my toes will unfreeze and I may be able to think again.

People often ask me how I manage to get so many things done in a day, and since what I just did was a pretty good example, I'll run it past you. While I was waiting those six minutes for my footwarmer to heat up, I took a potty break, unloaded and reloaded the dishwasher, checked on the fire in the woodstove, turned that pad that Peaches drug out in the snow (you'll read about this in the next paragraph) over so the other side would dry out, brewed some tea (which added an additional two minutes), washed and refilled the Kleen Kanteens with water and stuck them in the fridge, and now I'm back at my post with warm toes, a cup of hot tea, my feet in my fleece "foot bag" and a flannel shirt on over my T-shirt, and I'm typing away again. Still waiting to hear back from Marie and wondering what the hell I'm going to say to my editor tomorrow. With any luck, she'll be out of the office.

In other news, while we've been busy out in guest blog land, Peaches is gaining weight and getting back to the business of being a wild and crazy puppy. She's back outside full time now, and loving it, though she does dart into the house to chase the cats once in a while. The outside cats put up with her craziness, and Snake is still sharing the doghouse with her, though I'm sure she would prefer that Peaches not pull all the cozy pads out into the snow. I never know what I'll find when I go out on the porch. So far, she's pulled in a possum carcass and untold treasures from the garage, scattering them all over the place. Wish I had that much energy. She makes me tired just watching her run!

In just. . . let me see. . . eight days from the time that you will be reading this post, I'll be on the road to Nashville with Terri, Suzie, and Angie. I CAN'T WAIT!!! We've been working together most of the nights leading up to the trip, and we keep saying, "Let's just leave now. No one will EVER notice we're gone!" But, of course, they would, so we soldier on, giving meds, cleaning up poop, and generally caring for the sick while dreaming of better things to come. Perhaps it's fortunate that the shifts leading up to these adventures are usually quite busy. It makes the nights go faster and reminds us of why we need to get away for a while.

Just checked my email, (no pitch yet from Marie) and got a kiss from my DH who came home for dinner and is going back to work. He's having a crazy month, too. I just counted up all the tabs I have open on my web browser. There are eleven of them, plus my other email account, for a total of twelve. I finally discovered that leaving my computer on all the time with the browser open to all the guest blog sites was the best way to keep up with the comments posted. Then I just have to refresh them once in a while. I used to waste a lot of time waiting for my computer to boot up, but now, I just put it to sleep and then it's ready whenever I come back.

Just checked Facebook to find that my pineapples on Farm Town had gone to waste. I apologize for not responding to all of the gifts and other requests on FB. Just don't have the time to play these days. I plowed my pineapples under and didn't plant any more of them. *sigh* Fallow fields look so forlorn in the winter, but that's as it should be. I'm looking forward to being a bit fallow for a while myself.

Okay, I think I've written enough. *checks email* Got a message back from Marie, but no pitch yet. Guess I'd better go find a hunk to post with this. I'm thinking a nice, strong one, maybe standing on a sandy beach in the warm sunshine. . . .

There you go! Alejandro looks pretty good from the rear, but be sure to check back on Sunday for the front side. It's pretty interesting.

Tasty Tuesday Crockpot Apple Pie!

This recipe is courtesy of Donna's friend John Michael Lerma from St.Paul who is known for his pies and has appeared on the Food Network's Best Pie Contests.

I haven't made it yet, but just the thought of what it smells like while it's cooking is enough to give anyone a Zetithian-class orgasm!

What's better than Sex? Crockpot Apple Pie!

8 apples peeled and sliced (I recommend these for best taste and crispness: Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Jonathan, Jonagold, Winesap or Pippin) Apple pie spice: 1 ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon, ¼ teaspoon allspice, and ¼ teaspoon nutmeg ¾ cup whole milk 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened ¾ cup white sugar 2 eggs 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste 1 ½ cups Bisquick, divided 1/3 cup dark brown sugar 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, very cold cooking spray 1. Lightly spray bottom and sides with slow cooker. Toss apples in a large mixing bowl with Apple Pie Spice. Gently spoon apple mixture into slow cooker. 2. In a medium mixing bowl combine milk, softened butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla, and ½ cup of the Bisquick. Spoon over apples. 3. Combine the remaining Bisquick with the brown sugar. Cut cold butter into Bisquick mixture with a pastry cutter until crumbly. Sprinkle this mixture on top. 4. Cover and cook on low 6 to 7 hours or until apples are soft. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream or whipped topping. Serves 8

Tasty Tuesday Orange Banana Bread!

On New Year's Day, I felt like baking something and I had a nice, big naval orange and three aging bananas. This is what I did with them. . .

Cheryl's Orange Banana Bread

3 very ripe bananas
2/3 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
3 tsp baking powder
2 1/2 cups flour
the zest (about 1 Tbsp) and juice of one large orange
2 eggs
1/3 cup shortening

Cream the shortening together with the eggs, bananas, and sugar. Add the orange juice and zest and then beat in remaining ingredients. Bake in a large (9 X 5) greased loaf pan at 350 degrees for about one hour and enjoy!

Interview!

Since we had some virus issues last week, I'm posting that character interview here so you ladies who couldn't get to it can see it.

Here it is, minus the intro, which this gang probably doesn't need anyway.


Drusilla: Don't you just love being interviewed?

Zef: Nope. Hate it like the Scorillian plague.

Drusilla: No you don't, Zef. It gives you the opportunity to tell everyone about your hobby.

Zef: My hobby? Wasn't aware I had one.

Drusilla: (rolls eyes) Of course you do! All the words you know for, well, you know....

Zef: Oh, that. Right. Can't talk about that here, though.

Drusilla: Well, probably not...

Marla Elkhorn: Good afternoon all you readers out there in blog land! We're here today to talk with some of the characters from Cheryl Brooks' latest book, The Cat Star Chronicles: Fugitive. So, Zef, you know our hero and heroine pretty well. Tell us a little bit about Manx and Drusilla.

Zef: They were fun. I miss them something awful! Manx—he's a Zetithian, by the way—was my friend and Drusilla, well, she's a painter from Earth. Paints pictures of birds if you can believe that nonsense. Pretty useless occupation if you ask me.

Marla: (clears throat) I see. Zef, you're an eltran. Tell us what your life is like.

Zef: I live in a lake on Barada Seven and catch fish—no, scratch that—I can't catch them anymore. Too old and slow. Just have to eat the damn plants. Now, Manx could catch fish like no one you've ever seen. Used to spear them for me. I miss that... My fault he's gone, though.

Marla: Really? How so?

Zef: Made the mistake of playing matchmaker between him and Drusilla. Not that most Zetithians need any help in that department. Most females fall for them like fruit from a tree.

Marla: I see. Pretty sexy, huh?

Zef: Well, I'm no judge—I mean, look at me! I'm an amphibian. What would I know about—

Marla: (quickly) I see what you mean, Zef.

Zef: Hey, I know I'm ugly, but—now, here's someone I know you'd think was hot!

Marla: Ah, I see we have Manx joining us now. (gives him an appreciative look)

Manx: How are you, Zef?

Zef: (waves a flipper at Manx) Oh, fine. Not like the old days, of course, but I get by. So, are you two lovebirds still... (makes a loud, crunching sound which we can only assume is his way of laughing) Guess I shouldn't ask that. But you were always at it back on Barada. Got any kids yet?

Manx: We've been working on it.

Zef: (laughs again) That doesn't surprise me a bit.

Marla: So, Zef, tell us how you got them together.

Zef: Don't mind if I do. They were being such stupid, f—

Manx: Watch it, Zef!

Zef: —idiots. Her not wanting to talk to any men at all and him hiding out from the Nedwut bounty hunters. I mean, I told her he was pretty, but would she listen? No, she had to see him for herself.

Drusilla: (mutters) Do you blame me?

Zef: (sharply) I heard that, Drusilla. You think no one hears your quiet little comments, but we do. (laughs again) It was one of my favorite things about you.

Drusilla: (smiling) Not just that I didn't tell you to get lost whenever I was down at the lake working on my paintings?

Zef: No. Not just that. You were nice to me. (adds reflectively) One of the few bipeds I've ever met that was.

Drusilla: (shrugs) I try.

Marla: So, Manx, tell us your thoughts when you first saw Drusilla swimming in the lake? How did it affect you?

Manx: (swallows hard) I don't think I can say that here.

Zef: I can tell you that part! He was always naked, so you can see how she made his big—

Drusilla: Zef!

Manx: (in an aside to Drusilla) I knew it was a mistake to include him in this interview.

Zef: I heard that! I may be old and ugly, but my hearing is as good as ever!

Drusilla: (softly) Unfortunately.

Marla: So, it was love at first sight?

Zef: (snickering) More like lust at first sight.

Drusilla: Oh, it was not!

Zef: (smugly) You didn't see him after he'd caught a whiff of your scent. He was pretty taken with you. And I saw the look in your eyes when you spotted him there in the jungle. Couldn't take your eyes off him!

Drusilla: A gorgeous naked hunk with long black hair? Can you blame me?

Zef: Well, there's no accounting for taste. I mean, as humanoids go, he's okay, but you, well, you're a lot better looking in my opinion.

Drusilla: Thank you, Zef.

Manx: I have to agree with Zef on that one. You were the only woman who ever looked—or smelled—good enough to bring me out of hiding.

Zef: Must have been her red hair—or maybe her nicely shaped backside—

Drusilla: I think you've said enough, Zef.

Zef: I'm just getting started!

DONNA's Turkey Salad

"This recipe can be made with leftover turkey, or a turkey breast. The cook time will not include the baking of the turkey, just making the salad. Keeping the salad somewhat chunky is part of what makes it good. No food processors, please. I serve this on a bed of red leaf lettuce and garnish with red and green seedless grapes and candied pecan halves. Cubed jellied cranberry sauce is very good with it, so I place that on the plate around the salad. Serve with assorted crackers or breads."

Ingredients:

• 6 cups cooked turkey meat
• 6 eggs cooked
• 1 (16 ounce) jar sweet pickles, chopped
• 1 1/2 (10 ounce) jars mustard-mayonnaise blend (Dijon)
• 3/4 cup mayonnaise

Directions

1. Place eggs in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring water to a boil and immediately remove from heat. Cover and let eggs stand in hot water for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from hot water, cool, peel and chop.
2. In a large bowl, thoroughly mix the eggs, turkey, pickles, prepared mustard/mayonnaise sandwich and salad sauce (Or Dijon) and plain mayonnaise. Chill in the refrigerator approximately 3 hours before serving.

Peaches Update!

I took Peaches to the vet on Tuesday morning and she got her staples out and no longer has to wear the Cone of Shame! Yay!!!!

She's much happier. I spent a little time out in the yard after I brought her home, and she was having a blast, racing around and eating rose hips (which I'm sure are NOT on her diet!) while I pruned back the roses for the winter and dragged off some fallen limbs.

Her hair hasn't grown back yet--you can still see where her IV was--but she's out running around and harassing the cats just like she always did. As cold as it's been, she'll have to spend her nights inside, but I'll be letting her out some during the day. The vet said we could start adding regular puppy food back into her diet, but I tried giving her some of that soft food that comes in a pouch as a treat, and she still doesn't think it's edible. Go figure. A dog that will eat rose hips, but not dog food. Rose hips are supposed to be high in Vitamin C, though. Maybe she's trying to eat healthy. God knows that moist and meaty stuff doesn't seem very meaty. I tasted it once and it's a bit like eating springy cardboard.

Yes, the Cat Master has tasted dog food, which might have been better for me than the sugar free chocolate I ate a while ago. It must be full of mannitol or sorbitol because it's got my belly rumbling like crazy.

So much for eating healthy. . .

How I spent New Year's Eve

I think I've discovered the best use for a webcam. You can use it to look inside your own ear.

Think about that. Have you ever seen the inside of your ear? I haven't, and I still haven't figured out how to hook the camera up to an otoscope, but give me time.

The ear may still be a mystery, but I've already been able to get a great view of the inside of my nose. I didn't take a picture of it, though, something for which I'm sure you'll all be grateful.

I'm writing this on New Year's Eve. I got put on call, so I've been busily working, putting up all the links to the various blogs I'll be a guest on throughout the month of January as I do my best to promote Fugitive and hopefully sell enough copies so I can retire. Ha! I would probably have done less work and more partying if I'd been on duty in the ICU because at last report, they had no patients.

I'd be warmer, too. My feet are freezing. I need to microwave my little rice and herb hot pack thingy. What do you call these things, anyway? I'm sure they have a name. I don't use it on my shoulders like I'm supposed to. I heat it up and put it on the floor and then rest my feet on it. Works quite well as a bed warmer, too.





















Me and the guys have already been pigging out on the shrimp cocktail and cheese and crackers and chocolate cream Oreos and now I'm looking forward to getting into my nice, warm bed and going to sleep, but it will be midnight in about two hours, and there's always a chance that I'll get called in. No point in calling it a night just yet.

But such is life.

I don't look quite as bad in this pic as I did on those first webcam shots I took. They were plumb scary! Hair was sticking up and I had on my Las Vegas pj's. This is what my computer screen sees most of the time. Me, peering at it as though it held the secrets of the universe, and, who knows, perhaps it does. . . .

I've just figured out which is the next open spot on my blog schedule, and it looks like this one will be going up on a Wednesday, which means I need a nice whopping weasel to go with it.

Decisions, decisions. . . .

Tasty Tuesday Asparagus Pudding!

I know what you're thinking. Asparagus pudding? EEEWWW!!!! But trust me, even my guys who have a strong aversion to anything green will eat this. Not Sam, of course, (he can't be fooled!) but Mikey and Budley will eat it up!

I developed this recipe as a variation on a spinach casserole, so, if you like, you can make it with one package of frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed until relatively dry instead of the asparagus. If you use spinach, you may want to stir it together as opposed to blending it.


Asparagus Pudding

1 egg
1 tall can of asparagus, drained
dash of cayenne
1/4 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/3 cup flour
3/4 cup grated colby jack cheese
3/4 cup milk

Place all ingredients in the blender and blend until smooth. It will look like really thick pea soup. Pour into greased casserole dish (1 quart size?) and bake at 400 degrees for 45 min until the middle puffs up (it will sink a little after you take it out of the oven) and the top is lightly browned.

The beauty of this dish is that it isn't fussy about cooking times or temperatures. If something else needs to be baked at 350, you can throw this in with it and just bake it until the middle puffs up and enjoy!
