Whopping Weasel Virgin?

I'm pretty sure this fellow is straight. I mean, check out the pictures he's looking at--at least, I THINK that's a woman. Too bad we can't see his face along with his other parts, which are all very nice, but I guess we can't have everything.

I finished Virgin and sent it off Tuesday morning before heading out to my riding lesson. I could have sent it Monday night, but for some reason I didn't want to let go of it one moment before I had to. My agent only gave me one suggestion after she read it, which was to make the opening scene as sexy as the one from Fugitive. Seems she'd discussed this with my editor and that was one of the things she wanted to be sure were included in the book.

This was something I knew my editor wanted, but which is easier said than done, particularly when you have a virgin hero who has rarely even had an erection before. True, he's finally spotted a woman who interests him, but as you know, unlike today's Whopping Weasel candidate, Zetithians can't function without the scent of feminine desire. Pictures and fantasies just plain don't work for them.

I've had a few people write to me to complain that they didn't like the idea that Zetithian men couldn't masturbate. This was a characteristic that I felt made the Zetithians more animal-like--that scent was more important to them than anything else. I stretched this a bit in Fugitive; Manx can do it, but only because of his keen sense of smell. He still has to have a woman at least upwind from him. An aroused woman. Dax, on the other hand, has rarely met a non-Zetithian woman whose scent does it for him and hasn't a clue what it feels like. My agent was able to offer some suggestions for the opening chapter, which made my work a little easier, but it was still hard to come up with anything quite as hot as Fugitive's prologue, and I'm not sure I succeeded.

This is one of the problems inherent in writing a series; once you've decided on the traits of a particular species, you pretty much have to stick to them. You can stretch the rules, but breaking them whenever it's convenient makes your creations seem less real. I've tried to adhere to those basic principles in my writing. If a character has supernatural powers, it's because those powers are natural for their species. In Virgin, I use a character that is a Mordrial, the alien species from which Tisana (Warrior) was descended, and from whom her powers are derived. Threldigan is a full-blooded Mordrial, but there are still limits to his powers. The Mordrials can control one of the elements (Tisana's specialty was fire) and/or possess some form of mind-reading ability (Tisana's was reading the thoughts of animals). Threldigan can read minds to a certain extent, but he is also a magician, adept at creating illusions, though these are learned abilities, rather than magical powers. For him to be able to do more than his species allows would be cheating, just as it would be for Dax to be aroused by something other than a female's scent.

I'm pretty sure the manuscript will come back to me with more suggestions from my editor, but this is the first step, and I'm glad it's finally done. Now I have to write a dozen guest blogs for Hero and start on the proposal for the next project, book #8 of the CSC, which has yet to be named.

And so it continues. . . .

The Final Stop!

I'm blogging today on My Overstuffed Bookshelf! The topic is my favorite part about writing Fugitive and what my ideal writing day would be like.

Hmmmm..... Ideal writing day??? I don't think I've ever had one of those.... Should be interesting.

Interview!

Since we had some virus issues last week, I'm posting that character interview here so you ladies who couldn't get to it can see it.

Here it is, minus the intro, which this gang probably doesn't need anyway.

Drusilla: Don't you just love being interviewed?

Zef: Nope. Hate it like the Scorillian plague.

Drusilla: No you don't, Zef. It gives you the opportunity to tell everyone about your hobby.

Zef: My hobby? Wasn't aware I had one.

Drusilla: (rolls eyes) Of course you do! All the words you know for, well, you know....

Zef: Oh, that. Right. Can't talk about that here, though.

Drusilla: Well, probably not...

Marla Elkhorn: Good afternoon all you readers out there in blog land! We're here today to talk with some of the characters from Cheryl Brooks' latest book, The Cat Star Chronicles: Fugitive. So, Zef, you know our hero and heroine pretty well. Tell us a little bit about Manx and Drusilla.

Zef: They were fun. I miss them something awful! Manx—he's a Zetithian, by the way—was my friend and Drusilla, well, she's a painter from Earth. Paints pictures of birds if you can believe that nonsense. Pretty useless occupation if you ask me.

Marla: (clears throat) I see. Zef, you're an eltran. Tell us what your life is like.

Zef: I live in a lake on Barada Seven and catch fish—no, scratch that—I can't catch them anymore. Too old and slow. Just have to eat the damn plants. Now, Manx could catch fish like no one you've ever seen. Used to spear them for me. I miss that... My fault he's gone, though.

Marla: Really? How so?

Zef: Made the mistake of playing matchmaker between him and Drusilla. Not that most Zetithians need any help in that department. Most females fall for them like fruit from a tree.

Marla: I see. Pretty sexy, huh?

Zef: Well, I'm no judge—I mean, look at me! I'm an amphibian. What would I know about—

Marla: (quickly) I see what you mean, Zef.

Zef: Hey, I know I'm ugly, but—now, here's someone I know you'd think was hot!

Marla: Ah, I see we have Manx joining us now. (gives him an appreciative look)

Manx: How are you, Zef?

Zef: (waves a flipper at Manx) Oh, fine. Not like the old days, of course, but I get by. So, are you two lovebirds still... (makes a loud, crunching sound which we can only assume is his way of laughing) Guess I shouldn't ask that. But you were always at it back on Barada. Got any kids yet?

Manx: We've been working on it.

Zef: (laughs again) That doesn't surprise me a bit.

Marla: So, Zef, tell us how you got them together.

Zef: Don't mind if I do. They were being such stupid, f—

Manx: Watch it, Zef!

Zef: —idiots. Her not wanting to talk to any men at all and him hiding out from the Nedwut bounty hunters. I mean, I told her he was pretty, but would she listen? No, she had to see him for herself.

Drusilla: (mutters) Do you blame me?

Zef: (sharply) I heard that, Drusilla. You think no one hears your quiet little comments, but we do. (laughs again) It was one of my favorite things about you.

Drusilla: (smiling) Not just that I didn't tell you to get lost whenever I was down at the lake working on my paintings?

Zef: No. Not just that. You were nice to me. (adds reflectively) One of the few bipeds I've ever met that was.

Drusilla: (shrugs) I try.

Marla: So, Manx, tell us your thoughts when you first saw Drusilla swimming in the lake? How did it affect you?

Manx: (swallows hard) I don't think I can say that here.

Zef: I can tell you that part! He was always naked, so you can see how she made his big—

Drusilla: Zef!

Manx: (in an aside to Drusilla) I knew it was a mistake to include him in this interview.

Zef: I heard that! I may be old and ugly, but my hearing is as good as ever!

Drusilla: (softly) Unfortunately.

Marla: So, it was love at first sight?

Zef: (snickering) More like lust at first sight.

Drusilla: Oh, it was not!

Zef: (smugly) You didn't see him after he'd caught a whiff of your scent. He was pretty taken with you. And I saw the look in your eyes when you spotted him there in the jungle. Couldn't take your eyes off him!

Drusilla: A gorgeous naked hunk with long black hair? Can you blame me?

Zef: Well, there's no accounting for taste. I mean, as humanoids go, he's okay, but you, well, you're a lot better looking in my opinion.

Drusilla: Thank you, Zef.

Manx: I have to agree with Zef on that one. You were the only woman who ever looked—or smelled—good enough to bring me out of hiding.

Zef: Must have been her red hair—or maybe her nicely shaped backside—

Drusilla: I think you've said enough, Zef.

Zef: I'm just getting started!

Marla: Just the same, I think we'd better stop there before things get out of hand. To find out more, you'll just have to read the book! You'll find Fugitive on your local bookstore shelves now.

Zef: Hurry out and buy your copy today! Or better yet, buy two!

Drusilla: Zef!

Manx: Let him talk. He might make us rich.

Drusilla: (dryly) My paintings of you have already made us rich.

Manx: Oh, yeah, right. . . .

I'm also a guest today on Marie Sullivan Force's blog. Marie had some really tough questions for me and we're giving away a book, so come on over and join the fun!

Happy New Year!!!

2010 arrived here in the Eastern time zone exactly one minute ago. Right now, I'm probably swallowing the last of my sparkling grape juice in the ICU and going off to check vital signs on my patient(s) for the night.

Today also marks the official release of Fugitive. Some of you already have it, and some have already finished it, and I sincerely hope that you all have fun reading it.

To celebrate the release and the new year, my gift to all of you this New Year's Day will be to send each of you a signed bookplate and a bookmark. All you have to do is email me at cheryl.brooks52@yahoo.com with your mailing address and I'll get them out to you ASAP.

I'll be doing a lot of guest blogging on various sites this month, so I will post a link to each one on the day it's supposed to go up. I'd love to have all of you visit the other blogs and give the other readers your two cents' worth on Fugitive and the rest of the series. Word of mouth is the most important means of selling books and you ladies are some of the best spokespersons ever!

I have so enjoyed this past year of blogging and posting hunks for your entertainment and enjoyment and look forward to beginning another year of fun with the best fans in the world!

Happy New Year!!!!

Monday Moons!

I'm supposed to pick up Peaches from the vet today if she's doing okay. The vet told me on Saturday that she wasn't out of the woods yet, but as I write this on Sunday morning, I have no idea what's going on with her.

That's the bad thing about the vet's office; no one answers the phone on Sundays. I have to assume that someone goes into the office to care for the pets that are there over the weekend, so if there was anything terribly wrong someone would call me, but, unlike a hospital, you can't visit on Sundays which leaves you in limbo to a certain extent.

Another thing I'm worried about is that Peaches is essentially an outdoor dog, but with being inside for several days, I'm not sure I'll be able to leave her outside anymore. I sure hope so, because the indoor cats weren't crazy about her being in the house with them. She might have been feeling rotten, but she still tried to get them to play with her, and they weren't having any of it!

On a more positive note, I received my new bookmarks that our publicist had made for my booksignings coming up next month. I still don't have my author's copies of Fugitive yet, but I know they've been printed because a reviewer in Australia has one. Here's the link to her review on Veiled Secrets Reviews. She gave Fugitive five silver dragons and told me she stayed up all night reading it.

I guess that's a good thing, huh?

Saturday's Hunk of the Day!

Is Manx!

Looks like the folks at Sourcebooks have given Fugitive a new cover, but at least they didn't change the name--which I heard they might do. That would have been so confusing....

So, what do you think? Is this one a keeper?

Autumn Leaves

Remember the bamboo I got in Myrtle Beach? It hasn't grown very much. In fact, for a while there, I thought it would die. The little ground-cover weed that came up in the pot with it has done quite well, though.

I took these pictures on Friday morning. It was wet, dreary, and cool. Very fall-like with dead leaves everywhere. I prefer that "Golden Autumn" look, but we may have to wait another week or two before we get that.

It seems odd not to have a book to promote. For the past two years, every change of season has brought another book. It'll be fun promoting Fugitive over the holidays. Maybe I'll even get in on a Christmas book signing somewhere. Who knows? I should probably start talking to the local bookstores, but I'm such a wuss when it comes to that kind of thing. I need one of my buddies to be my promoter. They're much better at it than I am.

Don't you just love puppies and pumpkins? There's something about having a pumpkin sitting out on the deck that just makes me feel good. Maybe it's the bright color that distracts me from all the plants and flowers that are about to call it quits for the year. My morning glories take all summer to grow up over the deck railing, and then the first frost wipes them out. But that's the way of all things. One dog dies and another takes his place.

I think we finally decided to name the puppy Sweet Pea. It seems sort of natural, because that's pretty much what she is. Very sweet and about the size of a pea. She'll probably outgrow the size thing, but I believe her personality will remain the same. I hope so. Either way, she's off to a good start.

Just chillin'. . .

I was in the mood for a sweet one today. I think he qualifies.

I keep thinking I need to be starting another book. Actually, I have. I have the template set up and the first two sentences of Renegade. That's all! It's hard to imagine that it will eventually become a 90,000+ word book someday.

LOL! Only 89,970 words to go. . . .

Maybe I'll just chill on the beach with him for a while. Who knows, I just might be inspired!

Funny thing about inspiration. You never know when it will strike. Too bad I can't write everything that pops into my head down just when I think of it. I have to mull it over first and then write it. I say I don't plot out books ahead of time, but maybe I do. I just don't do it on paper.

I'm rambling, can you tell? This is what happens when a writer loses direction. They ramble until they find their way. At that INRWA meeting I went to last Saturday, the speaker said the same thing: Just write. It doesn't matter if it's any good because you can always fix it later. You just have to do it. I have no problem writing most of the time. I hear voices in my head: They speak, and I write. Trag (Hero) was easy. He's not based on any particular actor or singer or anyone else, for that matter. He was just that younger brother type. I can't explain it any better than that. I hope the Renegade guy can speak to me as well as Trag did. Manx (Fugitive) was pretty good, too. He always knew what to say, but I did base him on someone. He's Jeff Goldblum, believe it or not. Somewhere along the way I lost Jeff's voice and it became Manx's own. It's nice when that happens, but it doesn't always turn out that way. You just have to find that starting point. After that, they take on a life of their own.

Come on little voices! Speak to me!

Meeting deadlines.....

There's nothing quite like realizing at 9pm that you have no post ready to go up at midnight, but here goes!

I've been reading through the final edits of Fugitive for the past several days, and the one thing that stands out is that I know I could have done better. It's amazing how much I've learned since I last edited that manuscript. Just yesterday I went to the meeting of the INRWA and the guest speaker gave us plenty of useful pointers; some that I'd never heard before. I guess it just goes to show that writing is, indeed, a learning process, sort of like practicing nursing or law. You can't know everything at the outset, you have to gain experience along the way.

I figured out a lot of things on my own before I was published, and I've learned quite a few since then--most of which I wish I'd known from the start. It would have made my life (and editing) much easier!

I wonder if my readers realize what a rookie I am. I've had thirty years to become a good nurse, but writing is a relatively new activity for me. I have to assume that those folks who review my books don't know anything about me; they only know what they read on the pages of my novels. Can they tell that I'm only a beginner? Probably. My writer friends are all very encouraging, but I still don't know everything I think I should about being an author. Unfortunately, I have to keep writing whether I know what I'm doing or not. I attended plenty of workshops at the conference in DC and came away with an even stronger conviction that I'm totally clueless!

After I finished with Fugitive, I probably should have drunk a toast or something, but all I did was send the corrections in an email and then open up the file for Hero. I'm glad I did, though, because I've had such a pleasant surprise! I'm not seeing a million things I'd like to change, so I must be improving. Either that, or I'm just slightly brain-dead from all the editing. Time will tell.

Meanwhile, here's a nice new hunk for you to enjoy. Frank Sepe is his name. Donna sent me several pictures of him. He's a little too beefy for my tastes, (she thought so, too) but you be the judge.

Kindle is Coming!!!!

For those of you who have been writing to ask when Rogue and Outcast will be available on Kindle, according to my editor, they should be available in e-format by the end of the year and Fugitive will be released simultaneously in e-format and print in January 2010!

Take a look at those eyes Thursday!

Today we're focusing on a different aspect of male anatomy which is the one that most women claim to notice first. That being those windows to the soul, the eyes.

Whether blue or green, black, brown, or hazel, you can't deny that they get our attention. A man may have no other attribute worth mentioning, but if he's got the right eyes and the right expression, well, we ladies will turn to mush in a heartbeat!

For today's entry into the Bedroom Eyes catalog, we must thank our own Exotic Erotic Expert, Leslie. This is Kostas Martakis, a popular Greek singer from Athens. His eyes are just the shade of blue I envisioned for Tychar in Rogue.

Most of my heroes have had some pretty fabulous peepers. So far I've done black eyes for Cat, blue eyes for Tychar, golden eyes for Leo, and yellow eyes for Lynx. My next two heroes, however, both have eyes of green. Trag, whom many of you already know, will be taking center stage in Hero, but before that, you'll be meeting Manx in Fugitive, who has black hair and emerald green eyes.

I haven't talked much about Fugitive yet, but it's coming up soon. I scheduled an appointment today for three months from now, which would make it right before Thanksgiving. I'll have started on another book by then, either that or I'll be working on revisions to Hero--and there are ALWAYS revisions!--but after Thanksgiving comes Christmas and New Year's and Fugitive will be out.

I'm not looking forward to writing the million or so blogs to promote it (perhaps I should start now!) but my holiday season will be spent promoting a book that isn't Christmas themed at all, but rather takes place on a jungle planet where the natives are vegetarians and no weapons are allowed. Sound like a safe place for a fugitive Zetithian to hide out? Maybe, but you know those damned Nedwuts; they don't follow anyone's rules.

My heroine in this one is Drusilla, a wildlife painter who visits Barada Seven to paint the waterfowl. Imagine her surprise when she takes up temporary residence in a house by a beautiful lake and meets Zef, the tough-talking lake-dwelling eltran who just happens to be friends with Manx, the elusive fugitive of the jungle.

There's a little of Tarzan in Manx, but a whole lot of panther, too. He's very stealthy and secretive, having been on the run from the Nedwuts for twenty years or more. Manx has stowed away on ships bound for new worlds and has tried to live a normal life wherever he winds up, but the last time the nasty beasts nearly caught him, and now he's doing his best to remain hidden.

Until he sees Drusilla and catches a whiff of her intoxicating scent. Suddenly, his intention to keep his distance evaporates and the game of cat and mouse that ensues is fun, exciting, and very sexy.

But there are dangers on Barada Seven that have come from different worlds, and Drusilla isn't the only one searching for Manx. She has some stiff competition, and in the race to find the last known Zetithian, the winner takes all. . . .

Another Fine Hunk!

After the wild response to yesterday's post, I thought we should tone things down just a bit to allow you all some time to recover your wits.

This one isn't quite so controversial--he's just, plain cute, which, if you haven't figured it out by now, is one of my preferences. His name is Justin Seitz, and though he may not have a weasel of record length, he has other fine qualities to recommend him. Great body, charming smile, the kind of fluffy hair my fingers would love to get lost in, and, yes, a yummydoodle that looks, well . . . yummy!

I did use a picture of him once before, but you couldn't see his face very well in that one, which is unfortunate because he's actually quite adorable--and a bit of a tease!

I received the copyedited manuscript for Fugitive yesterday, and, fortunately, they didn't do much to it. They used a different copyeditor this time, and her style is slightly different from that of the previous editor, who had a very light touch--either that, or he was too distracted by the story line to notice my mistakes. There were only a few minor details to sort out, so I was able to get through it last night without screaming, which was a first! I'll go through it a few more times, but though I'll be working on it for the next several days, you can all rest assured that there will always be hunks posted here for you to drool over at your leisure.

To those of you who are new to the blog, there are plenty of things in the archives to keep you busy, as Cecile discovered Wednesday night! We're all about having fun here at CBEB, so go for it!

In other news, I was contacted yesterday by someone at RWA about being interviewed by a Swedish journalist at the RWA conference in July. They wanted to interview a writer with a medical background, so my name came up. I said okay, but I'm still wondering why that medical background is important. I mean, God knows I don't write about doctors! Either way, it should be interesting. I'll keep you posted on the details.

Well, I'm off to read through Fugitive again . . . and again . . . and again. . . .

Oh, be sure to click on the pictures of Justin, ladies. He's even better when he's, you know. . . ENLARGED???

PS: Hey, Kendra! Think we can find a guy like this to do body shots with while we're in DC?????

Nah, prob'ly not. . . .

Cover Models Revealed!!!!

If you're like me, you love seeing the whole picture. I was looking for a yin/yang photo for Casablanca's blog on Saturday, so I did a Google image search and found one I liked. Then I noticed that it came from Dreamstime.com, which is the company that was given credit for my cover photos. So I went model hunting, and look what I found!

Leo was on Fotalia, but the rest of them were right there on Dreamstime! Trust me, hunting for them was fun, especially since you could really zoom in on the photos and find others of the same model. The one for Fugitive I'm not really sure about because you can't see much of his face--it was more that it was a similar pose than anything--but I think the others are pretty obvious. I went mostly by the shape of their mouths, and with Rogue I went for the neck and cleft chin, but that jawline on Lynx was the clincher! Obviously, they've all been altered in some way. *sigh* Too bad none of them really have long, curly hair. . .

After yesterday's revelation from Donna, I just had to work on this one, myself.

There you go, Benji. You now have your book cover with your head chopped off!

LOL! Email his grandmother again, Donna. I want him to see this!

And on some days, the news is good. . . .

On Tuesday, my riding lesson was canceled, so I took Damar out to the arena to teach him to lunge. I've been working on trying to get him on a horse trailer so I can take him to the trainer (which he has flatly refused to do) and he wasn't too happy about lunging, either. He about pulled my shoulder out a couple of times, and we were both sweating like--well, like horses--by the time we were done, but I think some good was accomplished.

Then I took some stuff to the recycling center, and had to use the truck instead of my car, which should give you some idea of just how long it's been piling up. On the way back, I stopped at the feed store for some horse feed, and on my way out, my cell phone rang. I answered it without looking at the caller ID, assuming that it was Sam calling to tell me what he wanted from the grocery.

Surprise! It wasn't Sam; it was my editor calling to say that she liked the changes I'd made to Fugitive, which I was very relieved to hear! Then she told me to take a deep breath, that she had something else to tell me. So I took the deep breath as I was climbing into my truck, and she told me that when she'd pitched Hero to the powers that be as the sixth and final book in The Cat Star Chronicles series, they said: "Only six? But cats have nine lives--we can't stop now!" Therefore, it looks like those two option books and possibly one other will continue the series. I told her I'd come up with an idea that would give me more Zetithians to work with, which she seemed pleased to hear. She did promise to spread them out so I won't go crazy trying to write them, which I was pleased to hear!

So, the good news is that there will be more Zetithians beyond the six we already know about, but just how they escaped the destruction of Zetith won't be revealed until towards the end of Hero. Until then, it's a secret!

When is a weed not a weed?

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Last year I tilled up a spot between my lilac and blueberry bushes to plant iris and day lilies, but as it turned out, someone else had other plans for that bed. Quite often, when weeds take over it's not a pleasing thing, but when something as pretty as Dame's Rocket moves in, you really can't complain. There had been a few of them growing with the blueberries, but when I started dumping manure there and then tilled it repeatedly, well, I guess the conditions for the seedlings were just a little too good to resist! If you look very closely, you might be able to see the plants that I actually put there, but they're definitely being dwarfed.

Writing is a little bit like that. Sometimes secondary characters can take over a story, becoming pervasive weeds, choking out the hero and heroine and drawing most of the attention to themselves. I had that experience when I wrote Rogue; Trag was just too strong a character to remain forever in the background. Even though I wound up giving his brother most of the best lines, Trag's personality still came shining through, and, as so many of you have pointed out, he needs his own book.

This week, I'm finishing up with Fugitive and getting the blogs for Outcast written so I can get back to Trag's story, Hero. It was my intention to make him a character that readers would want more of, and, apparently, I succeeded. I just hope his book does him justice.

This will be Trag's own place to shine, just as this spot under the nectarine tree was where I intended the Dame's Rocket to bloom and grow.

It actually looks better there, doesn't it?

In other news, our friend Kendra Leigh Castle now has her own blog! Check it out at: http://kendraleighcastle.blogspot.com/

Sunday's Hunk of the Day!

Remember the cowboy I posted a while back? Well, I found the rest of him. . . .

I just knew that picture had been edited!

Shhh!!! Do your gasping softly, ladies! He's sleeping! We wouldn't want to wake him . . . would we?

Yesterday, my son, Sam, asked me why I wasn't working on a book. He's always worried that I'll get fired if I don't get enough sleep before going to work at the hospital, or if I'm late, etc., so I guess he thinks if I'm not writing all the time, I'll get fired from that job, too. I explained to him that I was waiting to hear from the assistant editor before I start working on Fugitive again. Of course, the the funny thing about writers is that we don't actually have to be employed in order to write. We do it anyway, and we also do it whether or not anyone ever reads what we've written. It's a strange occupation, that way. You spend most of your time fiddling around with a computer, telling it your innermost thoughts, and then you wind up sending it out for everyone to read. Most peculiar!

Speaking of writing, I'm blogging on Wickedly Romantic today. Come on over!
Okay, ladies! I found him! Wide awake and ready to ride!

Fugitive cover!

I just couldn't wait to share this one with you ladies.

Ain't he hot?

I'm SOOOO pleased. . . .

JOINT NOW
